I have found Randy to be a good engineer to work with.  His drive to ensure that the right thing is done for the project beyond just his own direct responsibilities has helped the overall team make strides in the maturity of the online services that he has worked with.  His technical skills are very good and his understanding of the technologies involved goes beyond wrote memorization that many of the engineers I have worked with in the past have shown.  This has in many cases ensured success where someone less experienced would not have seen the "ohh by the way" issues until after they were live.

Very hard-working and knowledgeable person.  Has an endless amount of experience working with servers/databases.  Positive attitude every day and simply gets the job done.

I didn't get time to have a conversation with you before you got away. Randy is an excellent teacher, instructor and guide. Randy does his homework before a project and comes prepared and ready to handle tough and challenging problems. Randy gives attention to detail in all areas of his work along with smart, reliable and effective solutions.

Seriously Jan, Randy simply whooped the entire organization (at Kibble & Prentice) into a clean and smooth software delivery operation in a heartbeat or two, even though they admitted they were NOT a software development shop. Randy single-handedly did their biggest conversions/migrations from one system to another.  But he didn’t do it with his eyes tied behind his back like so many do; what I mean by that is that he was fiercely analytical, and did it according to the business needs, not just the business “wants”. 

 

By the time I met him, he knew more about the business model details than most of the full-time senior business analysts.  We worked together on a lot of stuff; and he faithfully delivered things to me that I thought would take 3+ days, but I got them back in 3 hours with a hearty laugh.  Funny thing; I never could find a bug in even the most complex code.  He had cleverly out-thought me on every side.

 

I appreciated his fierce analysis and his passion for doing an extremely competent job.  Once I got used to that kind of loyalty and quality, my job was a sheer delight.  I learned a great deal from him.  I would consider it a pleasure and an honor to work side-by-side with him in any future gig.

 

Randy is also really funny.  He was truly a boost to the corporate morale!  His job is also his hobby, just like me.  Folks like he and I get paid to play with databases; this means we are tickled to death to find a nice juicy hard problem and knock it out with excellent code.
